The Residence

A once-off home,
built to stay in the family

Some homes are built to be sold. Some are built to be lived in. And every now and then, a home is built to become part of a family's story. This is one of those homes.

It was created as a long-term family home, meant to be enjoyed across generations, and you feel the difference the moment you walk in. Nothing here was designed to meet a market brief. The proportions, the finishes and the way the house opens to its garden were all decided for living in, year after year. There is a sense of permanence here that is hard to find.

Today it offers something different: a Johannesburg base for a professional couple whose life reaches well beyond the city. This is the home you return to.

Kitchen with bottle-green cupboards over a lit stone splashback and a pale stone island with open shelving
Main bedroom with a large round window framing the treetops

The living room rises to a double volume under a raw concrete ceiling, with a round window set high in the wall and a fireplace for winter evenings. Parquet runs underfoot and glass doors slide straight open onto the garden. The house faces north, which in Joburg is the single decision that makes a home warm in July, and skylights bring the sun into the middle of it. Every window is double glazed, so the warmth stays in and the noise stays out.

The kitchen runs along one wall: bottle-green cupboards over a pale stone splashback, with a strip of warm light beneath them. A stone island with open shelving sits at one end and the dining table at the other, so supper always comes with a view of the garden.

In the main bedroom, a large round window frames the treetops. It is the first thing you see in the morning. All three bedrooms are en suite, with a separate guest loo for visitors. One bathroom has a freestanding bath, another a walk-in shower behind glass, both finished in terrazzo with black tapware.

Above the living room, a mezzanine study looks out across the trees through a round window of its own and back down into the double volume, so whoever is working late is still part of the evening.

The Life You Live Here

A home to come back to

A Kitchen in Bottle Green

Green cupboards, a pale stone island and a strip of warm light under the units. Coffee at the island, supper at the table and the garden doors open in between.

A Round Window onto the Trees

The main bedroom looks straight into the treetops through a window cut as a full circle. You wake up to leaves and sky.

A Desk Above It All

The mezzanine study faces the treetops on one side and looks down into the double volume on the other. Work late without shutting yourself away.

A Heated Pool Against a Wall of Creeper

The heated pool has a dark finish and runs beside a wall gone green with creeper, a few steps from the covered patio. Somewhere to slow down at the end of a busy week.

Room for Friends When You're in Town

A covered patio with its own outdoor kitchen, a lawn under the trees and beds planted with grasses and strelitzias. Long Sunday lunches start here.

Lock Up and Leave

Solar panels with battery backup, private parking, armed response and a gardener included in the rent. Fly out on Friday and come home to the house exactly as you left it.

Location

Parkhurst, at your doorstep

Parkhurst is one of Johannesburg's most established neighbourhoods, and it still keeps a village rhythm. Saturday starts with egg baskets at Nice on 4th. Supper is Greek at Kolonaki, which has a reputation as one of Joburg's best Greek kitchens. Rosebank and Sandton are an easy drive for work, and at the end of the day the house is private and quiet.

Who It's For

For a life lived between places

This isn't the home for someone looking to put down roots and never leave. It is for someone whose life is already spread across places.

  • Johannesburg during the week.
  • The bush for the weekend.
  • The coast when you can.
  • The UK or Europe when work and life take you there.
  • And somewhere beautiful to come back to in between.

This is your Johannesburg base.
